Polhemsskolan, Gävle's largest upper secondary school, is committed to being at the forefront of its technology program to give students the best possible conditions for further studies and professional life. The majority of students have their sights set on engineering education, and there is a great need to be able to work practically with modern technology.

The challenge: Preparing the engineers of the future with limited resources

“We want students to be able to go from idea to finished product directly,” says Magnus Östlund, a teacher in the technology program. That's why we have created a Tech Lab where we collect various technical aids that students can use in their teaching.

The school had been working with 3D printers for a long time, but saw a need to broaden its capabilities – especially to enable the creation of more complex prototypes and product models. It became clear that a laser cutter would be an important addition. However, the challenge lay in financing – an investment that was difficult to bear within the school’s tight budget.

Logimark's solution: A powerful laser machine with local support

Through funding from the Ljungbergsfonden and Teknikerjakten, Polhemsskolan was able to seek funding to take the next step in its technology development. Magnus began researching the market to find a laser cutter that maintained high quality – and a supplier that could offer both support and security.

    – We wanted a Swedish supplier who felt serious and who could help with service and maintenance. When we found Logimark, it felt right right away – the website radiated professionalism and the product felt quality, says Magnus.

After contacting Logimark, the machine was ordered in the spring of 2024. Despite some delivery delays during the start-up, the teachers were able to start testing the laser machine during the summer, and in the fall it was introduced into teaching.

Results: Creative projects, greater understanding & increased motivation

The laser cutter has been an active part of teaching at Polhemsskolan since autumn 2025. The students have already used it in several projects – including in design and architecture specializations, as well as in their UF companies where products such as cutting boards are provided with laser-engraved logos.

“The students are impressed by what can be created. Many don't know at first what the machine can do, but when they see the possibilities, their creativity is awakened,” says Magnus.

Tech Lab now serves as an important platform where theory meets practice. In combination with the 3D printers, students can create more complex models and understand the process from drawing to finished product. Larger class projects are planned for the spring where all students will work actively with the laser cutter and the Ruby software – something that will also help them understand material science and technical settings in depth.

    – There is a lot of trial and error at the beginning, but that is also what makes them learn. The goal is for our students to be used to modern technology even before they enter university or into working life. This machine is an important piece of the puzzle there, concludes Magnus.
