EU's new wine marking requirement

Wine glass with wine bottle - wine marking requirements

From December 8 2023, the EU will introduce new wine marking requirements aimed at improving the information for consumers. The rules for labelling wines and aromatized wines sold within the EU will require, among other things, the ingredient list and nutritional information for the wine to be included on the label. The bottle labels that are not affected and need to be changed are the ones manufactured before Dec 8. They can continue to be sold until they run out of stock.

What must be on the new label?

Wine producers must now reveal ingredients, allergens, energy and nutritional information on the label.

According to Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011, on the provision of food information to the consumer, an ingredient is defined such as: each substance or product, including aromas, food additives and food enzymes or any component in a compound ingredient used by the manufacture or preparation of a food product and which is still in the finished product, possibly in modified form.

The nutritional declaration on the label may be limited to the energy value (in KCAL or KJ) provided the information is fully available. Additives must also be found on the label that includes acidity regulating agents, preservatives and antioxidants, stabilizers and allergens.

The energy information and allergens must occur on or be physically attached to the product. Some of the other information, such as ingredients, may be revealed via "electronic means" ex through a QR code.

This can be of great importance for people with allergies or intolerances, who will be able to make decisions on which wines they can consume without risking their health.

Wine that does not meet the requirements must be removed from the market and may also have penalties, according to the law.
