Different techniques for Glass Bottles

CIJ- Linx 8900 series labels on bottles
Inkjet CIJ high speed marking

Inkjet printing

Inkjet printing (CIJ) is the most widely used technology for variable information such as batch numbers, best-before dates and production codes on glass bottles. One of the biggest advantages is speed – CIJ can handle very high production flows without compromising clarity and precision.

The label can be applied directly to the neck, bottom or side surface of the bottle and remains clear and scannable all the way to the consumer.

Inkjet labelling is also a flexible solution for lines that handle multiple bottle sizes or rapid production changeovers, as the system can be easily adapted without disrupting the flow.

Labelling

Labels are the obvious choice when the bottle needs to carry both design and information. With the right material and adhesive, labels can be applied safely even on cold, damp glass surfaces. We offer different methods of application, including wrap-around that covers the entire bottle or smaller zone labels that complement the design.

For productions that require variable information, print & apply systems can print and apply the label in one step, simplifying labelling and increasing flexibility.

Laser marking

Laser marking provides a permanent marking directly into the glass surface and is ideal for products with high traceability requirements, long storage times or export, where batch numbers and codes must be guaranteed to be readable throughout the product's entire lifecycle.

Laser also provides a very sharp and professional finish that can enhance the premium feel of the product. Since the method does not require consumables such as ink or solvent, it is also a more durable and maintenance-free option for high-volume production.

Read more about Glass bottles

Glass bottles are used in everything from beverages and food to pharmaceuticals, and labelling is crucial for traceability, product information and brand identity. Common labelling requirements include batch numbers, best-before dates, barcodes and sometimes even logos or certification marks.

Labelling glass bottles places high demands on both technology and precision. The hard surface, the rounded shapes of the bottles and a production environment with humidity, cold or condensation are common challenges. In addition, there is often a release agent (cold end coating) on the bottles – a silicone-based substance that is used to reduce friction between the bottles in the line and protect the glass from damage. But this particular release agent can also affect adhesion and cause, for example, ink not to adhere properly.

Three proven techniques are used for labelling on glass bottles:

Inkjet (CIJ)
Industrial inkjet marking is the most common choice for variable information such as batch numbers and best-before dates. The technology is flexible, fast and works directly on the rounded surface of the bottle. With special inks, the marking can withstand both moisture and condensation, making CIJ a reliable solution for high-speed beverage production.

Laser marking
Laser creates a permanent marking directly on the glass by etching text or code into the surface. The marking cannot be erased or worn away, making the technology ideal for products that need to last a long time or where traceability is particularly important. For brands that want to signal quality and exclusivity, laser marking also gives a very professional impression.

Labelling
Labels are the obvious choice when you need to combine product information, design and traceability. They can be applied around the entire bottle (wrap-around) or in specific zones, and the choice of material can be adapted to both the production environment and brand profile. With the right adhesive, the label adheres stably even on cold and damp glass surfaces, and print & apply systems enable variable information directly on the label.

Our recommendation:
For standard batch number and best-before date marking at high speeds, ink marking is often the most effective choice. For long-term and durable marking, laser is an excellent solution. Labelling is recommended when design and brand identity are in focus, or when larger amounts of information such as barcodes and product details are needed.

Regardless of the technology, we at Logimark ensure that the solution is adapted to your production environment - so that the labelling on your glass bottles is always clear, durable and integrated into your flow.

Questions & Answers (FAQ)

It depends on the need. For batch numbers and best-before dates at high speeds, inkjet (CIJ) marking is the most common choice. For permanent and exclusive marking, laser is recommended, while labelling is best for larger amounts of information and brand design.
Yes – with the right type of ink. We offer solutions that are designed to stay put even on cold bottles exposed to condensation.
Yes, laser etching the marking directly into the glass surface. It cannot be worn away or erased, making it ideal for long-lasting and long-lasting products.
Labels are the right choice when the bottle should carry both design and information. With wrap-around or zone application, you can combine graphic elements with traceability data. Labels also work well when you want to use recycled or transparent materials to create a unique feel.
Absolutely. For example, many producers use a label for design and product information, and supplement it with ink or laser marking for batch number and best-before date.
Yes – with the right adhesive and material. We offer labels that are designed to last even on cold bottles, in refrigerated storage and during transport.
