Laser marking

Fiber laser

Fiber lasers are the first choice for most metal medical devices, such as stainless steel, titanium, aluminum and other alloys used in healthcare and laboratory environments.

The laser creates a permanent and highly durable marking with high precision, making it ideal for products that need to be identifiable throughout their lifespan.

UV laser

When the product consists of plastic or other heat-sensitive materials, UV lasers are often used instead.

The UV laser works with a shorter wavelength and produces very little thermal impact on the material. This makes it possible to create high-resolution markings without deforming, discoloring or affecting sensitive components.

The technology is used primarily when high precision is combined with high demands on the material's surface finish and function.

Regardless of whether fiber laser or UV laser is used, the goal is the same – to create a permanent, verifiable and durable marking that meets the requirements for traceability, quality and patient safety throughout the product's entire lifecycle.

Medical devices encompass much more than surgical instruments. The term includes everything from surgical scissors, tweezers and implants to pipettes, laboratory equipment, dental instruments and other products used in healthcare and diagnostics.

What these products have in common is that they are subject to very high requirements for identification, traceability and patient safety. The marking must often remain in place throughout the product's lifetime, despite repeated cleaning, sterilization and daily use.

This places completely different requirements than labelling packaging or transport packaging.

What is considered medical equipment?

The marking is part of the product's safety

Unlike a label on a box, the marking on a surgical instrument should remain for the entire life of the product. It is used to identify, for example:

  • manufacturer
  • item number
  • Serial Number
  • batch number
  • UDI code (Unique Device Identification)
  • Datamatrix code

The information makes it possible to track the product throughout its entire life cycle – from manufacturing and sterilization to use, service and possible recall.

The marking must withstand extreme environments

Medical devices are regularly exposed to very demanding environments. For example:

  • autoclaving at approximately 121–134 °C
  • chemical disinfection
  • alcohol-based cleaners
  • ultrasonic cleaning
  • repeated mechanical cleaning
  • daily wear

A label that wears off or fades means the product’s traceability is lost. Therefore, it is not enough for the label to be clear when the product leaves the factory – it must be just as legible after hundreds of sterilization cycles.

Permanent marking is a prerequisite for UDI

More and more medical devices are now subject to Unique Device Identification (UDI) requirements. UDI makes it possible to identify each individual product throughout its entire life cycle. A UDI label typically consists of:

  • a machine-readable Datamatrix code
  • a readable serial number
  • product identification according to international standards

To ensure long-term readability, permanent laser marking is often chosen.

The material determines which laser is used

There is no universal laser that fits all medical devices. The choice is determined by, among other things:

  • material
  • surface treatment
  • contrast requirements
  • product geometry
  • size of the marking
  • verification requirements

Therefore, many projects begin with material tests where different laser types, power levels and parameters are tested before the final process is determined.

Labelling is an integral part of quality work

Laser marking on medical devices is not just about identification. It is an important part of the entire quality system. After laser marking, Datamatrix codes and other information are often verified with vision cameras or code verifiers to ensure that the marking meets the requirements for readability and contrast.

This way, the manufacturer can ensure that each product is correctly identified before it leaves production.
