Different techniques for Plastic sheets, plastic film & sheet material

Inkjet printing

Inkjet marking (CIJ – Continuous Inkjet) is one of the most widely used technologies for moving plastic sheets and films, thanks to its non-contact, fast and flexible nature. It is particularly well suited to processes where the material is in continuous motion – e.g. rolled plastic film or sheets transported on belts.

Advantages:

  • Marks directly on most plastic surfaces: smooth, matte, shiny, anti-static

  • Handles high speeds and varying formats without affecting flow

  • Written in real time – perfect for batch numbers, date codes, barcodes or logos

  • Requires no direct contact – reduces wear and works on sensitive surfaces

  • Available with custom ink types for different types of plastic (e.g. PE, PP, PET)

Laser marking

Laser marking is an excellent choice when you need permanent marking directly onto plastic materials – especially on sheet materials or rigid plastic sheets. It is a non-contact and durable solution that provides precision and long-lasting durability, without the need for ink or labels.

Advantages:

  • Extreme durable marking – withstands handling, UV light, temperature and chemicals

  • No consumables – low operating costs and minimal maintenance

  • High precision – capable small characters, QR codes, serial numbers and symbols

  • Capable of marking both light and dark plastic materials, depending on laser type (CO₂, fiber)

Labelling

Labelling is particularly useful when you want to combine visual design, customer-specific information and technical data – or when the material is not suitable for direct marking, e.g. due to protective film, shiny surfaces or transparent plastic types.

Advantages:

  • Can be placed where direct marking is not possible – e.g. on protective film or outside of stacked sheets

  • Can be printed with graphic elements, logos, warning symbols and customized information

  • Labels can suppressed or marked in real time with batch information via TTO or CIJ

  • Works well for both individual sheets and roll packaging of plastic film

In the plastics industry, plastic sheets, films and sheet materials are used in a wide range of applications – from packaging and construction materials to technical components and the food industry. Here, labelling plays an important role for traceability, production control and regulatory compliance.

Whether it concerns semi-finished products such as rolled plastic film or finished sheet materials, the labelling must be clear, durable and adapted to the properties of the material. It must withstand handling, storage and further processing – and function regardless of whether the product is sold directly to the customer or used in a longer production chain.

The challenge often lies in the surfaces of the materials – smooth, shiny, flexible or protected with film – as well as in the handling, where marking must be possible. in motion, on large surfaces or in rolling formatTherefore, it is crucial to use a solution that works seamlessly in the line, without compromising on quality or speed.

Do you need to label plastic film in rolls, sheet material or finished plastic panels? We help you develop a solution that works for your specific material – with technology that is carefully adapted to both the production environment and the labelling requirements for clarity and durability.

Questions & Answers (FAQ)

Yes, absolutely. We offer marking that works directly on most plastic surfaces – even glossy, matte or protected surfaces. The important thing is to choose the right technology for the right material. We will help you find a solution that works in your particular environment.
For rolling plastic film, we often recommend inkjet (CIJ) or thermal transfer (TTO) marking. Both technologies can handle high speeds and can mark directly on the film or label, without affecting the material.
Labelling or laser marking is often used here, depending on whether the marking is to be visible and removable – or permanent. Labels are perfect for clear logistics marking, while laser is good when the marking must remain throughout the product's life cycle.
Yes, but the marking is usually done on the protective film itself, not directly on the plastic surface. It is possible to mark with ink or label, and we adapt the technology so that the information follows the product all the way.
The most common are batch numbers, article numbers, barcodes, product information and logos – but production data, dates and customer-specific marking can also be added.
Then laser marking is an excellent option. It is permanent and can withstand heat, friction and chemicals. We also have inks that are resistant to UV light, abrasion or moisture – depending on the requirements of your product.
It's common in plastic production, but we have solutions for that too. With the right settings, ink or surface treatment, you get reliable marking even in dusty or antistatic environments.
Marking can be done at full speed, directly on rolling plastic film or moving sheets. Our systems are built to keep up with your production.
