Labelling is a slightly more unusual option, but it does exist. Using print & apply systems, labels can be printed and applied directly to the packaging in real time, making it easy to include variable data such as batch numbers, best-before dates, barcodes or QR codes.
With the right choice of material and adhesive, labels can stay on shiny, flexible or damp surfaces, which is a common challenge in the food industry. In addition, labels can provide added design value through special effects such as foiling, holography or transparent material.

In our experience, the most common labelling process is done directly inside the flowpack machine, before the plastic film has been formed into a finished bag. There are several advantages to this:
Once the packaging is formed, the surface often becomes uneven and moves more randomly on the conveyor belt, making it much easier to create a neat and consistent result before the bag is formed.
This is also why you often see a pre-printed design with a special white box where variable information is applied directly in the machine.
Labelling does occur – but is generally less common directly on traditional flow wrap packaging.
The reason is simple: Soft plastic packaging such as chip, nut or snack bags is often uneven and movable after the packaging process, making it more difficult to apply labels with high precision.
