Food tray

Food trays are widely used in the food industry – for ready meals, meat, fish, cheese, salads and delicatessen. The labelling must therefore withstand tough conditions: cold, moisture, grease, steam and sometimes even frost. At the same time, batch numbers, best-before dates and barcodes must be clear, legible and permanent throughout the product’s life cycle.

Different techniques for Food tray

Thermal transfer (TTO)

TTO is the most common and accurate method for food trays packed in flowpack or topseal machines. The marking is done directly on the packaging film or label before it is sealed. The result is sharp, high-resolution prints of best-before dates, batch numbers, logos and QR codes.

Benefits: Perfect for flexible lidding films, provides durable and sharp marking even in refrigerated environments.

Inkjet printing

CIJ is used when marking is done directly on the finished tray – often on the plastic or cardboard surface. The technology is contactless and can handle both flat and uneven surfaces at high speeds. With the right ink, the marking can withstand condensation, grease and cold.

Benefits: Flexible, fast and adaptable to different tray materials.

Since food trays can be made of plastic (PET, PP), cardboard or composite materials, different techniques are required depending on the surface. The most common solutions are thermal transfer (TTO), ink marking (CIJ), laser marking and labelling. With the right technology, we help you create clear, durable and attractive markings on all types of food trays – regardless of the material, production environment or labelling requirements.

Questions & Answers (FAQ)

It depends on where the marking is to be placed. On plastic film, thermal transfer (TTO) is usually best due to its high resolution and sharp marking. For marking directly on the tray, inkjet marking (CIJ) works great, while laser is best for permanent marking on hard plastic trays.
Yes. With the right type of ink or label material, it is possible to label on cold or condensation-covered surfaces. Our solutions are designed to provide clear and durable prints even in refrigerated production environments.
Laser works best on hard plastics (such as PET, PP or HDPE) or lidding films with pigmented surfaces. For thin or transparent films, TTO is recommended, which provides higher contrast.
Absolutely. Labels are often used when the product requires more information, multiple languages or a designed surface. They can be placed on the top, bottom or long side of the tray and applied automatically in line.
With the right technology and materials, marking is fully durable. TTO provides heat-resistant prints, CIJ can use ink that adheres even to greasy surfaces, and laser is not affected at all by temperature or humidity.
For high production volumes and standard marking, TTO is often the most cost-effective, as the technology combines high print quality with low operating costs. Ink is an affordable alternative for simpler marking on finished trays.
Yes. Many producers use TTO for batch numbers on the plastic film and labels on the bottom of the tray for nutritional information or promotions, for example.
