
Thermal transfer (TTO) is the natural solution when the marking is to be applied directly to the thin plastic film before the tray is sealed.
Because the plastic film is still flat and controlled inside the thermoforming machine, the printer can place the marking with very high precision, resulting in a sharp and clear print without affecting production speed.

For best results, we recommend that the plastic film is already provided with a special marking area in the design phase where variable information is to be placed. A light or white box, for example, provides significantly better contrast and makes both text and codes easier to read and scan.
However, once the plastic film has been sealed over the tray, TTO is no longer a suitable option. The technology is developed to print on the flat film before the actual packaging is completed.
Inkjet marking is mainly used when the pre-packaged product has already left the packaging machine.
Information can then be applied directly to the sealed plastic film or to the side of the tray, depending on how the production line is designed.

Often, food tray packaging takes place in a thermoforming or tray sealing machine where the product is placed in the tray before being sealed, often in a modified atmosphere (MAP), to extend shelf life.

However, when the food tray is pre-packaged, inkjet marking or labelling is often the most effective option. Inkjet marking is ideal for date and batch information, while labelling offers greater opportunities to combine variable information with product design, marketing and various types of closure solutions.
