Different techniques for Tetra Pak and other beverage packaging

Best-before date marking

Inkjet printing

Ink marking is the most widely used technology for Tetra Pak packaging. It is non-contact, fast and flexible, making it ideal for high-speed lines. With specially developed inks for cardboard, coated surfaces and humid environments, very clear prints can be achieved even on packaging with a glossy surface or condensation.

Advantages:

  • Works on both flat and inclined surfaces.
  • High writing speed
  • Can write on both packaging and cork
  • Cost-effective for variable information.

Laser marking

Laser is a sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative for marking Tetra Pak and other beverage packaging. The technology etches the marking directly into the top layer of the package – often the plastic laminated surface – resulting in a permanent and sharp code.

Advantages:

  • Marking that is not affected by moisture or wear.
  • No consumables
  • High precision even at high speeds.

Marking on Tetra Pak and other carton-based beverage packaging places high demands on precision, readability and durability - and requires clear and durable marking. We offer inkjet and laser marking solutions - adapted for batch numbers, best-before dates and barcodes on laminated surfaces and caps at high speeds.

Used for everything from milk and juice to plant-based drinks and soups, the packaging is often exposed to condensation, temperature changes and mechanical handling. The information printed on it – batch numbers, best-before dates and sometimes even QR or barcodes – must therefore remain clear throughout the product’s lifecycle.

The most common and reliable marking methods for Tetra Pak and similar beverage packaging are inkjet marking (CIJ) and laser marking.

Questions & Answers (FAQ)

For most products, inkjet (CIJ) marking is recommended due to its flexibility and speed. For permanent and maintenance-free marking on laminated surfaces, laser is a strong alternative.
Laser works best on laminated cardboard and plastic packaging where the surface layer can react with the laser to create contrast. On completely white or transparent surfaces, ink can provide better readability.
Yes. Our labelling solutions are tested to withstand both cold chain and transport. Best-before dates, batch numbers and barcodes must be clear from production to store – regardless of handling.
Labels are often used on bottle-like beverage packaging, export products or promotions. They provide space for more information, multilingual labels and visual elements without changing the basic packaging.
For high-speed production with continuous marking, inkjet marking (CIJ) is the most cost-effective option. For long-term operation without ink consumption, laser can provide a lower total cost of ownership over time.
Yes. The marking can be placed in several positions – directly on the carton, on the closure or on the cap. CIJ systems are especially suited to marking on hard-to-reach surfaces without affecting the product flow.
