Inkjet printing

Inkjet technology is capable of marking on smooth and damp surfaces without the requirement for direct contact, making it very robust in real production environments.

It can easily handle changes in information such as dates, batch numbers and shift codes without requiring changeovers or production stops. It also works well at high speeds, matching the pace of filling lines for milk, juice or cream, for example.

It is precisely the flexibility and operational reliability that make CIJ the natural first choice for most Tetra Pak applications.

Advantages of CIJ on Tetra Pak packaging:

  • Tetra Pak packages are already pre-printed with high-quality graphics. CIJ makes it possible to add the necessary information without covering or disrupt the original design.
  • The marking can be applied to small areas, for example at the top of the packaging, where it is visible but discreet.
  • Since the packaging already contains all visual communication, extra labels are avoided – which saves both material and cost.
  • CIJ is well suited for high-speed lines and can handle continuous labelling without slowing down production.
  • Perfect for batch numbers, best before dates and other variable information that needs to be readable throughout the product's lifecycle.

Laser marking

Laser can be an option in more specific cases. If production is completely standardized – with the same design, the same location and no need for changes – laser can be integrated into the line for permanent and low-maintenance marking.

It is particularly suitable for highly repetitive operations where the same product is continuously processed. The technology etches the marking directly into the top layer of the packaging – often the plastic laminated surface – providing a permanent and sharp code.

Advantages:

  • Marking that is not affected by moisture or wear.
  • No consumables
  • High precision even at high speeds.

Marking on Tetra Pak and other carton-based beverage packaging places high demands on precision, readability and durability - and requires clear and durable marking. We offer inkjet and laser marking solutions - adapted for batch numbers, best-before dates and barcodes on laminated surfaces and caps at high speeds.

Labelling Tetra Pak packages presents several practical challenges that place high demands on technology selection. The packages often have a glossy and sometimes damp surface, making it difficult for some labelling methods to adhere or deliver consistent quality.

At the same time, the design is already pre-printed with logo, graphics and barcode, which means that you rarely want to use labels that disrupt the visual expression. The labelling therefore needs to be applied discreetly – usually at the top of the package, in the “ridge” – and at the same time be clear, durable and adapted to high production speeds.

Questions & Answers (FAQ)

For most products, inkjet (CIJ) marking is recommended due to its flexibility and speed. For permanent and maintenance-free marking on laminated surfaces, laser is a strong alternative.
Laser works best on laminated cardboard and plastic packaging where the surface layer can react with the laser to create contrast. On completely white or transparent surfaces, ink can provide better readability.
Yes. Our labelling solutions are tested to withstand both cold chain and transport. Best-before dates, batch numbers and barcodes must be clear from production to store – regardless of handling.
Labels are often used on bottle-like beverage packaging, export products or promotions. They provide space for more information, multilingual labels and visual elements without changing the basic packaging.
For high-speed production with continuous marking, inkjet marking (CIJ) is the most cost-effective option. For long-term operation without ink consumption, laser can provide a lower total cost of ownership over time.
Yes. The marking can be placed in several positions – directly on the carton, on the closure or on the cap. CIJ systems are especially suited to marking on hard-to-reach surfaces without affecting the product flow.
