Corrugated cardboard & carton

In warehousing and logistics, marking on corrugated and cardboard is crucial for traceability, identification and efficient handling. From production to delivery, marking is used to indicate batch numbers, article numbers, barcodes, QR codes, address information and warehouse locations. Clear and reliable marking ensures that each product can be traced throughout the entire chain – from manufacturer to end customer.

Labelling

Labelling is the most widely used option for logistics and transportation information, such as shipping labels, item data, EAN and GS1 codes. The systems can both print and apply labels automatically (print & apply) in real time.

Advantages:

  • Clear labelling with barcodes and text in high resolution.
  • Can be applied to different cardboard qualities and pallet structures.

Marking on corrugated and cardboard places special demands on the materials as they can be porous, uneven and sometimes dusty, which affects how well ink, labels and laser ink adhere. Therefore, inkjet marking and labelling are primarily used.

Where in warehouse & logistics is labelling used?

Labelling occurs at almost every stage of the logistics chain:

  • Pallet marking: Identifies the pallet's contents, batch and destination.
  • Outer packaging & cartons: Marked with barcodes, addresses and product information.
  • Picking and packing stations: Labelling of individual boxes and packages for traceability.
  • Incoming goods: Registration and marking upon arrival for inventory control.
  • Outbound shipments: Printing shipping labels, SSCC and tracking data.

For most logistics flows, we recommend inkjet marking for high-resolution direct marking on corrugated and cardboard, as well as labelling (print & apply) for transport and pallet marking. For more advanced needs, such as integrated data communication with WMS or ERP systems, we offer complete automation solutions with vision systems and verification for full control of the quality, readability and traceability of the marking.

Questions & Answers (FAQ)

For most applications, we recommend inkjet marking for high-resolution direct marking. It provides clear text and barcodes directly onto the carton without the need for labels. For shipping labels and logistics data, print & apply labelling is most often used.
Yes, inkjet marking works great. Our printers use pigmented ink with high contrast that is clearly visible even on dark or uncoated corrugated cardboard.
Labels are best when you need a lot of information, multilingual text, or multiple barcodes on the same surface. They are also used when the surface is uneven or has large variations in color, as the label provides a smooth printing surface.
It's mainly about choosing the right technology and ink type. Our systems use quick-drying ink that sticks even to porous or dusty surfaces. For labelling, we use adhesives adapted to cardboard and varying temperatures.
Yes. Labelling works best on laminated cardboard. Labels can be applied directly to the smooth laminate.
For large volumes of outer packaging or shipping boxes, inkjet labelling is the most cost-effective, as it does not require label material and can handle high production speeds without downtime.
