What is food packaging?
For packaging to be approved for food, it must meet clear requirements for contact with food. For example, food packaging must protect the food from external influences and ensure that no substances that could affect the quality or safety of the food are transferred.
For packaging to be approved for food contact, it requires:
- That the packaging is made of materials that do not release harmful substances at levels that could affect the safety, quality or taste of the food.
- That the packaging has undergone testing to ensure that it complies with regulations such as EU Regulation (EC) No 1935/2004, or equivalent legislation in other regions.
- That the packaging has been tested to ensure that substances from the material are not transferred to the food in quantities that exceed permitted limits.
- That the packaging is manufactured under conditions that ensure it is clean and free from contamination that could affect food safety.
Different types of food packaging

Material choice – plastic, paper and other options
The choice of material largely depends on the area of application and design.
All our packaging is adapted for food and is built in two-three layers/barriers; surface layer, middle layer and inner layer. It is possible to combine different materials to get a unique design, either with a matte or glossy finish.
These materials are available to choose from:
- PE = Polyethylene (plastic).
- PP = Polypropylene (plastic).
- PET= Polyester (thermoplastic and synthetic fiber).
- Kraft paper (white or brown).
- Bags made of recyclable or compostable material.
PE + PE + PE = recyclable.
PE + PET = NOT recyclable.
Please note Transparent bags are available in both PE, PET and PP.
What to consider when choosing packaging
When choosing between different food packaging, it is important to consider:
- What protection the product needs (e.g. against moisture, oxygen or UV light).
- Whether the packaging needs to be resealable or recyclable.
