Advantages of pigmented inks

Dyes filter light, making the ink darker. Pigments reflect light and make the ink lighter. This makes pigmented inks ideal for dark substrates such as cables, pipes, bottles, electronic chips and car parts, which often tend to be black or darker in colour. Pigmented inks also provide extremely high colour fastness which ensures that the colour is retained for a long time.

Challenges with pigmented inks

It is quite well known, especially for users of 'white ink' or pigmented inkjet printers, that pigmented inks often have more daily challenges and are not as easy to work with as regular dye-based inkjet printers. They often require more frequent servicing, daily cleaning and often lead to more downtime. But why?

• Pigment is not naturally soluble in the solvent, which means it is often present:
• A decrease in contrast.
• Blocked filters, pipes and nozzles.
• Broken pumps and valves.
• The pigment also tends to settle and clump, resulting in poor printing.
