Questions & Answers (FAQ) about Laser cutters

The following materials can be cut with a Trotec CO2 laser:

  • Acrylic
  • Plastic sheets
  • Leather
  • Synthetic leather
  • Paper
  • Plastic material
  • Textiles
  • Wood
  • Cardboard
  • Cork
  • Rubber
  • Food

Trotec laser cutters cannot cut any type of metal.

Please note that certain types of materials should not be engraved or cut with a laser due to their chemical composition. These materials contain hazardous substances that are released during processing in the form of gases and dust, which affect both the user and the operation of the machine. Some of these materials include:

  • Inferior Leather (chrome VI)
  • Carbon fibre
  • Polyvinyl chlorides (PVC)
  • PVC based synthetic leather
  • Polyvinylbutural (PVB)
  • Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE/Teflon)
  • Beryllias
  • Materials containing halogens (e.g. fluorine, chlorine, bromine, iodine and astatine), epoxy or phenolic resins.

A laser cutter can cut a wide variety of materials. There are a few factors that determine the maximum cutting thickness - the material, laser power and speed, among others. The laser power of the machines ranges from 30-200 W.

Normally you can count 10 w = 1 mm on plastic and acrylic.

No, Trotec machines are designed to be user-friendly. Their software, Ruby, is easy to use even for beginners. Very little training is required for the user and an integrated guide provides additional tips if needed. You can choose the material you are working with and the material effects you are looking for e.g. deeper engraving, dark engraving or cut-outs and the cloud-based material database helps you to streamline the process.

Ruby contributes to a simple and fast workflow from idea to final product!

We also offer training and support if you need help getting started.

Thanks to their protected design and robust construction, Trotec laser cutters require minimal maintenance. However, regular maintenance such as cleaning lenses and mirrors is recommended to maintain high performance and extend service life.

Trotec laser cutters are equipped with several safety features - protective covers, temperature sensors, safety switches such as main switch, key switch and emergency stop button. These minimise risks to the operator.

Machines from Trotec have CE marking, which fulfils EU requirements for safety, health and environmental protection. This gives you as a user a guarantee that the machine is safe to use and that it complies with current legislation.

This is not an easy question to answer. Each machine is configured according to the customer's wishes and therefore a fixed price cannot be set. Factors that influence pricing include

  • Laser source - Which material should you laser treat
  • Laser power - How many units will you produce and what is the thickness of the material?
  • Work surface - How big are your workpieces?
  • Accessories and equipment - Work table, Exhaust system, rotary engraving accessories, lenses, etc.

But you can expect a Trotec CO2 laser to cost from around £100.

All Trotec machines are developed and built in Austria and are of high quality.

How a laser cutter works

Trotec laser cutters use advanced laser technology to precisely cut or engrave different types of materials such as wood, plastic, cardboard, leather, textiles, cork and rubber. This technology is based on directing a laser beam at the material, which either melts, burns or vaporises it depending on the type of material and depth of cut.

What's unique about Trotec laser cutters

Trotec has integrated several technologies to optimise performance:

  • Speedy series: Known for its high engraving and cutting speeds and precision, this popular series from Trotec is ideal for everything from engraving to deep cuts in multiple materials.
  • Flexx technology: The Speedy series from Trotec can be ordered with both CO2- and fibre lasers, allowing you to switch between different materials without having to change machines. This is a unique advantage for businesses that need maximum flexibility.
  • InPack technology: Trotec laser cutters have an enclosed design that protects sensitive components from dust and particles, reducing the need for maintenance and extending the life of the machine.

With Trotec, you get access to intuitive Ruby software that makes it easy to upload and edit design files, adjust settings and gain full control over the entire process - from design to finished product.

How to use Trotec laser cutters

Using a Trotec laser cutter is both easy and flexible. Here is a quick guide on how to go about it:

  1. Load the design: Start by creating or importing your design in Trotec's Ruby software, where you can easily adjust details, lines, sizes and other settings.
  2. Set materials and parameters: Trotec's software has preset parameters for a variety of materials, so you can quickly choose the settings that suit your material for engraving and cutting. You can also create your own material settings as you get to know the laser.
  3. Start cutting: Once everything is set, the laser cutter starts working. The laser follows the preset design exactly, and thanks to Trotec's high-speed motors, engraving and cutting are extremely fast.
  4. Check the result: Once the cutting is complete, you can immediately see the clean, precise cutout or engraving. Trotec laser cutters minimise waste and finishing, saving both time and material.

Common uses of laser cutters

Laser cutters are used in a wide range of industries, thanks to their versatility and precision. Here are some examples:

  • Advertising and signage: Cut and engrave acrylic, wood or plastic with incredible accuracy for signs and display materials.
  • Manufacturing industry: Ideal for labelling or cutting acrylic parts for precision parts in machines or tools.
  • Architecture and modelling: Build detailed models with precise cutting of thin materials like cardboard, wood and acrylic.
  • Furniture and interior design: Cut and engrave detailed patterns in wood, leather and textiles, perfect for customised furniture or interior design products.
  • Education and research: Many schools and universities use laser cutters to help students create prototypes and learn design and engineering processes.
