Ribbons, also known as thermal transfer ribbons, are a key component in label printers and thermal transfer printers. Their primary function is to transfer ink onto the surface of the label through a thermal process. When used in thermal transfer printers, heat is applied to melt the ink from the ribbon and apply it to the label, resulting in clear and durable prints.
The ribbon plays a crucial role in the quality and durability of label printing. There are different types of ribbons, including wax, wax/resin, and resin, each tailored for different applications and materials. Wax ribbons are suitable for paper and some coated label materials, while wax/resin and resin provide increased durability and are suitable for materials such as polyester or polyethylene. Resin is more durable and is used for more demanding applications where the label needs to withstand substances like gasoline and other fluids.
