Wine bottle labels

A well-designed label acts as a marketing tool in itself: it tells the story of the wine, signals quality and builds trust with the consumer. Colors, fonts, materials and small design elements interact to create the right feeling – from exclusive elegance to playful innovation. There is no universal solution, but the important thing is that the label reflects the character of the wine and speaks directly to the right target group.

When the customer is faced with a choice between several unfamiliar bottles in the same price range, it is often the label that feels most attractive and interesting that wins. In other words, a smartly designed label can not only enhance the experience – it can also directly affect sales.

But it's not just the design that's important. In the beverage industry, labels also have to withstand tough conditions. Cold, condensation, sunlight, water and friction are everyday occurrences – and that's why it's crucial to choose a label that is durable and lasts all the way to the consumer.

Questions & Answers (FAQ)

There is a whole range of materials! Yes, there really is and for cans you can pretty much choose any material. For paper labels you can choose, for example, coated paper, rustic wine paper or metallic paper. If you want rustic wine paper, you should keep in mind that it can be easily destroyed if the can is exposed to condensation. In that case, it is good to have a protective film inside the label that prevents moisture from getting in. Plastic or synthetic labels are available in polypropylene, polyethylene, vinyl or polyester, where the latter two are UV-resistant. For a can where the label needs to be more flexible, it may be advantageous to choose polyethylene. Inkjet is a material on the label, available in both plastic and paper, matte and glossy, which absorbs ink, which makes it optimal for labels that are to be printed on your own in a color printer. Other materials worth mentioning are transparent and holographic. If you are looking for a label made of recycled material, we have it in both paper and plastic. If you need labels for a glass jar, it can be common to want a label that is removable and/or an adhesive that is washable. For example, if you want the customer or seller to be able to reuse the jar. Important! For jars that are to be returned for a deposit, you need an adhesive that is approved by Swedish return packaging. Tip! Keep in mind that the label material has a lot to do with the feel and design of the jar. If you want the jar to feel a bit luxurious with high quality, rustic wine paper or a soft touch laminate are a good choice.
Of course, this depends on how wet the can is. We recommend that the product should be as dry as possible for best results and durability. If the can is wet, air bubbles can easily form and the label can become wrinkled. A cold product is lighter, but if the can is filled with cold liquid and left cold, condensation can easily form, making it more difficult for the label to stick. We therefore recommend that the can not contain any liquid when applying the label.
The minimum order value is 2000 SEK, the number of labels for this amount depends on material, size and adhesive, among other things.

For a bottle where the label needs to be more flexible, it may be advantageous to choose polyethylene, for example. There are bottles that have different densities – high or low. This means that the product lets through certain chemicals that may be on the inside of the product material, for example shampoo bottles. In that case, it is advantageous to have a label that has the same density as the bottle so that it lasts better. To create a label, you need to specify the dimensions width x length and how it should be rolled up. We have a variety of existing punches in different sizes. If the dimensions are not in an existing punch, we can create a new punch or use laser cutting. A punch is a tool for cutting out labels.
The choice of material depends entirely on where and how the bottle will be used. For many wine producers, paper is the obvious choice because it conveys a classic, elegant feel and allows great freedom in design. There are several variations: White paper – timeless and versatile, perfect for clear graphics and modern minimalism. Natural white paper – an unbleached alternative that creates a warmer and more organic feel. Satin paper – smooth with a slight sheen, often used on premium wines where you want to signal luxury and precision. Hay paper – rustic, with visible structure and plant fibers, ideal for natural wines and artisan producers who want to emphasize authenticity. The disadvantage of paper labels is that they are sensitive to moisture. On bottles that are cooled in an ice bucket or stored in a refrigerator, an untreated label can start to bubble, soften or come off. The solution here is either to refine the paper with varnish/laminate or to choose synthetic materials. Plastic and synthetic labels (e.g. polypropylene, polyethylene, vinyl or polyester) are durable and can withstand both water and cold. The latter two are also UV-resistant, which means that the labels retain their color and shape even in sunlight. Polyethylene is extra flexible and is suitable for bottles with curved surfaces. For wines that often end up on ice, such as champagne or white wine, plastic is a safe choice because the label is guaranteed to stay intact. In addition to paper and plastic, there are also special materials such as transparent or holographic labels for a more modern expression, as well as options in recycled paper and plastic for those who want to make a more sustainable choice. One tip is to always think about how the material affects the feel. Do you want to signal luxury and tradition? Then textured wine paper or soft touch laminate is the right way to go. Do you want to ensure maximum durability? Choose plastic. Special rules also apply to bottles that are to be deposited – the glue must be approved by Returpack for the bottle to be recyclable.
Not in the printing – but in the choice of material. For example, sparkling and white wines should have extra durable labels because they are often cooled in ice buckets.
There are many options to make your label stand out. Examples of special effects include gold/silver foiling, silkscreen, embossing and hotfoil. Digital gold/silver/copper foiling: Digital foiling in metallic colors gives a raised visual and tactile effect on the label. Hotfoil: Gets a foiled effect from immersion in the label. Silkscreen: A varnish that is placed on top of the design that gives a raised visual and tactile effect on the label. Embossing/Embossing: Embossing creates a raised or lowered structure on the material that allows for both visual and tactile distinction on the surface. This special effect is most effective on paper materials, since embossing on synthetic materials can return to the original shape of the material. Laminate and varnish: Provides an extra protective surface and can be applied to create both matte and glossy effects. If you know that you will be printing something on the label, e.g. date or batch, it is advantageous to choose printable varnish.
