Wine bottle labels - Make the bottle as unique as the contents

When you stand in front of the shelf at Systembolaget and look out over rows of wine bottles – what makes you pick up a particular bottle? The answer is often the label. In just a few seconds, it determines whether the bottle feels exciting, reliable or simply right for the moment. Since many wine purchases are spontaneous, design becomes a decisive factor – not only for attention, but for the purchase itself.

A well-designed label acts as a marketing tool in itself: it tells the story of the wine, signals quality and builds trust with the consumer. Colors, fonts, materials and small design elements interact to create the right feeling – from exclusive elegance to playful innovation. There is no universal solution, but the important thing is that the label reflects the character of the wine and speaks directly to the right target group.

When the customer is faced with a choice between several unfamiliar bottles in the same price range, it is often the label that feels most attractive and interesting that wins. In other words, a smartly designed label can not only enhance the experience – it can also directly affect sales.

Reasons why we recommend Wine bottle labels

Durable in all environments

A wine label must withstand cold, humidity and temperature changes – from the wine cellar to the ice-filled wine cooler. Custom labels are designed to fit neatly and securely, without bubbling, peeling or fading.

Reinforces the wine's identity

Material, structure and finish are crucial to the feel. The right label reflects the character of the wine – from rustic and natural to luxurious and sophisticated – and makes the bottle stand out on the shelf.

Optimized for sales

An attractive label influences purchasing behavior. By combining sustainability with design solutions such as foiling, embossing or varnishing, the label becomes a strong marketing tool that drives sales.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Wine Bottle Labels

The choice of material depends entirely on where and how the bottle will be used. For many wine producers, paper is the obvious choice because it conveys a classic, elegant feel and allows great freedom in design. There are several variations:

  • White paper – timeless and versatile, perfect for clear graphics and modern minimalism.

  • Natural white paper – an unbleached alternative that creates a warmer and more organic feel.

  • Satin paper – smooth with a slight sheen, often used on premium wines where you want to signal luxury and precision.

  • Hay paper – rustic, with visible structure and plant fibers, ideal for natural wines and artisan producers who want to emphasize authenticity.

The disadvantage of paper labels is that they are sensitive to moisture. On bottles that are cooled in an ice bucket or stored in a refrigerator, an untreated label can start to bubble, soften or come off. The solution here is either to refine the paper with varnish/laminate or to choose synthetic materials.

Plastic and synthetic labels (e.g. polypropylene, polyethylene, vinyl or polyester) are durable and can withstand both water and cold. The latter two are also UV-resistant, which means that the labels retain their color and shape even in sunlight. Polyethylene is extra flexible and fits bottles with curved surfaces. For wines that often end up on ice, such as champagne or white wine, plastic is a safe choice because the label is guaranteed to stay intact.

In addition to paper and plastic, there are also special materials such as transparent or holographic labels for a more modern look, as well as options in recycled paper and plastic for those who want to make a more sustainable choice.

One tip is to always think about how the material affects the feel. Do you want to signal luxury and tradition? Then a textured wine paper or soft touch laminate is the way to go. Do you want to ensure maximum durability? Choose plastic. For bottles that are to be returned, special rules also apply – the glue must be approved by Returpack for the bottle to be recyclable.

This of course depends on how wet the bottle is. We recommend that the product be as dry as possible for best results and durability. A wet bottle can easily create air bubbles and the label can become wrinkled.

A cold product is lighter, but if the bottle is filled with cold liquid and left cold, condensation can easily form, making it more difficult for the label to stick. We therefore recommend that the bottle should not contain any liquid when applying the label.

If you put the bottle with the label on it in the fridge or freezer, there is nothing strange. The durability of most labels has an incredible range – From +80 degrees to -40.

If you want to put the label on a frozen product, special freezer labels are required.

If the label is to be stored in a very humid environment, a plastic label is recommended for best durability.

Not in the printing – but in the choice of material. For example, sparkling and white wines should have extra durable labels because they are often cooled in ice buckets.

Yes, there is, both recycled plastic and recycled paper.

When ordering labels on rolls, it is most common for the labels to be on a backing paper to protect the labels during delivery and warehouse management. The backing paper is the paper that you peel the label off of and is made of silicone to make it easier to peel the label off. Once you have peeled off the labels, the backing paper is thrown away, which is bad for the environment.

It is now possible to order labels without a backing paper, linerless, where the labels are just rolled up separately. There is then a varnish on top of the label material that acts as a kind of protection so that the adhesive does not stick to the labels in the roll. These are temporarily only available as direct thermal labels in paper.

We'd be happy to tell you more if it's interesting.

Yes, you can get any shape!

We have a variety of existing punches in different sizes. If the shape is not in an existing punch, we can create a new punch or use laser cutting.

A punch is a tool for cutting out labels.

The minimum order value is 2000 SEK, the number of labels for this amount depends on material, size and adhesive, among other things.

There are many options to make your label stand out. Examples of special effects include gold/silver foiling, silkscreen, embossing and hot foil.

  • Digital gold/silver/copper foiling: Digital foiling in metallic colors provides a raised visual and tactile effect on the label.
  • Hot foil: Gets a foiled effect from an immersion in the label.
  • Silkscreen: A varnish that is applied over the design, creating a raised visual and tactile effect on the label.
  • Embossing/Stamping: Embossing creates a raised or depressed structure on the material that allows for both visual and tactile distinction on the surface. This particular effect is most effective on paper materials, as embossing on synthetic materials can return to the original shape of the material.
  • Laminate and varnish: Provides an extra protective surface and can be applied to create both matte and glossy effects. If you know you will be printing something on the label, such as a date or batch, it is best to choose printable varnish.
  • When you contact us, we will take a look at your design and then discuss the size, material, adhesive, quantity and special effects for the intended wine bottle label. We will then prepare a quote.
  • Once you have approved the quote, we would like you to send us your label design in PDF format. We will send you an order acknowledgement and this design must also be approved based on delivery address, quantity and material.
  • We then produce a proof that must be approved to ensure that the information is correct.
  • We then start the printing process and the labels are rolled up onto reels as requested.
  • Delivery approximately 8-10 days.

Materials and adhesives for wine labels

When choosing labels for wine bottles, the material is as important as the design. The right combination of paper, plastic and adhesive (glue) determines not only how the bottle looks on the shelf – but also how the label lasts over time.

Paper is the most classic choice and gives an authentic, natural feel that is perfect for wines where tradition, quality and craftsmanship are to be communicated. There is everything from minimalist white paper to rustic wine paper with structure. For an extra premium feel, you can add foil, embossing or spot varnish. The disadvantage is that paper labels can be affected by cold and moisture, especially on bottles that are cooled in an ice bucket or refrigerator.

Plastic labels (e.g. PP, PE or PET) are the obvious choice when durability comes first. They are water and tear resistant, can withstand cold, condensation and rough handling – perfect for sparkling wines or bottles that will be kept on ice. With the right surface finish, even plastic can give an exclusive and elegant look.

At least as important as the material is the adhesive. Permanent adhesives are usually used for wine labels, which ensure that the label remains in place for the entire life of the bottle. When storing in cold, damp wine cellars or rapid temperature changes, you may need special adhesives that are adapted to these environments.

Today, there is also growing interest in sustainable labelsThere are both paper and plastic in recycled materials as well as washable adhesives that make it easier to recycle bottles – without compromising on design and durability.

In short: the choice of material and adhesive affects the feel, functionality and durability of your wine bottle labels. With the right combination, you get a label that not only looks great – but also stays put, whether the bottle ends up in a wine cellar, on ice or in the consumer’s hand.

Durable wine bottle labels – for a perfect impression all the way

A wine label doesn’t just have to look good when the bottle leaves the winery – it has to stay nice and intact all the way to the consumer. This means the label needs to withstand moisture, condensation, temperature changes, UV light and wear and tear during handling and transport.

Regular paper labels risk bubbling or coming off in humid environments, for example on a champagne bottle in an ice bucket. Here, protective varnish or laminate can make a big difference – or you can choose a synthetic label that is completely water-resistant. Temperature changes also make demands: the right material and adhesive ensure that the label stays in place regardless of whether the bottle is stored in a wine cellar or refrigerator.

For wines displayed in bright retail environments, it is wise to use UV-resistant paints or laminates that protect against fading. Finally, a durable surface treatment can ensure that the print is not scratched during transport or retail placement.

With the right combination of material, adhesive and protective finish, you get labels for wine bottles that maintain their exclusive appearance from bottling – right up until serving.

Printing techniques and special effects – how to make your wine label stand out

When you want your wine bottle labels to stand out from the competition, a nice layout isn’t always enough – it’s the details and finish that make all the difference. With today’s printing techniques and special effects, you can create labels that are both eye-catching and feel exclusive in your hand.

A popular choice is foiling in gold, silver or copper, which gives a metallic luster and is associated with premium quality. Equally effective is embossing, where the wine's name, logo or symbol gets a raised structure that is not only visible but also felt. If you want to highlight details more subtly, you can use spot varnish or relief varnish, where shiny surfaces contrast against a matte background and bring the label to life.

For extra depth and creativity, silkscreen printing add thicker layers of paint or varnish for a tactile 3D feel, while metallic and special colors gives everything from elegant shimmer to unexpected effects. And why not experiment with unique shapes or multi-part labels? A creative die-cutting or a separate neck label can give the bottle its own identity.

Behind these effects lies the choice of printing method. Digital printing is perfect for small and medium-sized runs, where you can change designs quickly or create personalized labels for different vintages or campaigns. For larger volumes, flexo printing often the most cost-effective option, with the same high quality but lower cost per label.

In short, there are almost unlimited possibilities today to design wine bottle labels that not only communicate the identity of the wine – but also arouse emotions and curiosity in the consumer. By combining the right technology with a well-thought-out design, you can elevate your bottle to a whole new level on the shelf.

Labels on a roll or sheet – which is best for wine bottles?

When ordering labels for wine bottles, you can usually choose between two formats: roll or sheetThe choice depends mainly on how many bottles you need to label and how the labels will be applied.

Labels on roll are the most common option for larger production runs. They feed smoothly into automatic labelling machines, making the process fast and efficient. Rolls also take up little space in the warehouse and are also suitable for semi-automatic or manual application on a larger scale.

Labels on sheets are better suited for smaller runs or when labels are to be applied by hand. They are supplied in A4 format, for example, and are easy to handle if you are only producing a few hundred bottles or have several different label variants running at the same time.

From a cost perspective, rolls are usually most affordable for large volumes, while sheets can be cheaper and more flexible for small runs. In summary: If you have machine application or large quantities – choose roll. If you work on a smaller scale or want easy manual handling – choose sheet.
