Inkjet printing

Inkjet marking is the most common method for marking caps in the food industry, for example on bottles for water, soft drinks, juice or dairy products.

The technology works by writing small characters or codes directly onto the surface of the cork without the need for contact with the product. This means that the marking is clear even on the rounded and sometimes uneven surfaces that corks have.

The marking is most often placed on:

  • On top of the cap (e.g. best-before date or batch number)
  • On the side of the cork when space is limited but you still want the code visible

Laser marking

Laser marking is a permanent and highly precise method for marking caps and seals in the food industry. Unlike ink, which is applied to the surface, the laser burns or etches the information directly into the material. The result is a durable marking that cannot be worn away, faded or affected by condensation.

The marking is usually placed on:

  • On top of the cork – for clear batch numbers, best-before dates or logos.
  • On the side of the cork – when you want discreet but readable codes.

Laser marking works particularly well on light-colored plastic caps or metal seals, where the contrast is clear. On colored plastic caps, the visibility of the marking can depend on the pigmentation of the material – something we help optimize through testing and the right laser selection.

Labelling

Labelling a bottle's cap or seal is an effective solution when you want to add information, security or branding directly to the top of the package. This can be a small round label on top of the cap or a neck label that wraps around the neck or edge of the cap.

Advantages of cork and seal labels:

  • Reinforces brand identity and creates an exclusive impression.
  • Can act as a warranty seal to show that the product is unbroken.
  • Provides space for campaign information, QR codes or small logos.
  • Flexible solution that works for different bottle sizes and materials.

Read more about Corks and Seals

Caps and seals are essential parts of many food packages, from water bottles and juice to dairy products and medically packaged foods. They are small, often rounded and made of plastic or metal – making printing a particular challenge.

The marking must be clear and durable despite limited surface area, round shapes and sometimes difficult material properties such as low surface tension or smooth surfaces.

Common challenges in cork and seal marking:

  • Rounded and small surfaces make it difficult to write clearly without the right technique.
  • Low surface tension in some plastics can make it difficult for ink to adhere.
  • Condensation and moisture affect both ink and labels if the right materials are not used.
  • High production speeds require technology that keeps up without compromising readability.

For batch numbers and best-before dates in fast lines, we usually recommend inkjet marking (CIJ) with inks adapted for plastic or metal. When the marking needs to be permanent and completely maintenance-free, laser is the best option. If more information, logos or promotional messages need to be included, labelling is a flexible solution.

With the right technology, we at Logimark ensure that even the smallest packaging parts – corks and seals – receive clear, durable and reliable labelling that meets both legal requirements and customer needs.

Questions & Answers (FAQ)

Yes. With inkjet marking (CIJ), you can print small batch numbers or best-before dates even on minimal surfaces, thanks to the technology being contactless and able to follow rounded shapes.
For metal, we usually recommend laser marking, as it provides a permanent and durable code that cannot be worn away. On painted or surface-treated seals, the laser can create clear contrasts.
On small surfaces this is usually not practical, but on larger caps or seals it can work. Alternatively, labels are used if more information or scannable codes need to be included.
For high volumes and standard marking (batch number, best-before), ink-jet (CIJ) marking is often the most cost-effective option. For long-term durability without consumables, laser can provide lower operating costs over time.
