Explanation of the different properties:
Work area: This is the area inside the machine where the material will fit.
Max marking area: This is the area that can be marked on the material. The size of the marking area varies depending on the lens choice.
Max height of material: This means how high of material you can place in the machine to be able to process it effectively.
Laser power fiber: The laser power has a direct impact on how deep you can engrave in metal.
Laser power MOPA: The MOPA laser is usually faster than the fiber laser and can mark anodized aluminum in black or recreate colors on stainless steel.

Which metals can be processed with the Trotec laser?
With Trotec laser machines, you can mark and engrave a wide range of metals – quickly, precisely and without contact, making them a versatile tool for everything from production marking to fine engraving in jewelry design.
Examples of metals that can be processed:
- Anodized aluminum
- Stainless steel
- Natural aluminum
- Brass
- Copper
- Coated metal
- AlumaMark®
- DuraBlack®
- Titan
- Precious metals
- Gold
Laser engraving in anodized aluminum – contrast, quality and durability
Anodized aluminum is a very popular material for laser engraving due to its durability and ability to produce sharp results. With fiber lasers, a white marking by removing the color pigments in the surface, especially evident on colored anodized surfaces. The material consists of a aluminum core and one thin, hard surface layer (6–22 microns) that protects against chemical and physical attack. Unlike mechanical engraving, which can remove the entire protective layer, laser engraving keeps the surface protection intact.
For natural anodized aluminum, where white engraving is less visible, it is advantageous to use a MOPA laser. honey short pulse times and correct settings you can create durable markings in everything from light gray to deep black – perfect for products where contrast and aesthetics are crucial.
The dark marking is achieved by recoloring the surface rather than removing it, which provides a smooth and durable finish. Adjust fill lines to affect the shade – the denser, the darker the result.
For best results:
- Use the engraving side of the material.
- Work with 600–1000 PPI resolution for sharp detail reproduction.
- Secure precise focus to avoid blurred outlines.
Keep in mind that the quality of anodized layers variesTrotec's own aluminum sheets have a surface layer of up to 22 micrometers, which provides superior durability when laser engraving.
Engraving and deep engraving in stainless steel – technology, speed and precision
To engrave in stainless steel requires high laser power in combination with low frequency, which gives high energy per pulse. Recommended rated speed is between 250–900 mm/sec, depending on application.
Regarding intaglio The process is similar to that of regular engraving, but requires multiple passes to reach the desired depth. There are two main ways to set the parameters depending on your priorities:
- Time-optimized deep engraving – fewer passes, slower processing, more material is removed quickly.
- Quality-optimized deep engraving – more passes at higher speed for a more even and precise result.
Keep in mind that the quality-optimized method usually takes up to three times as long like the time-optimized one, but gives sharper contours and a more uniform surface.
In both cases, a 20 watt MOPA laser with F-160 lens, which provides good control over both power and precision.
As this shows, there is many possibilities with deep engraving in metal – it all comes down to your requirements for appearance, depth and production time.

Questions & Answers (FAQ)
What type of laser is best for engraving metal?
For engraving on metal, it is mainly recommended fiber laser, because it has the right wavelength (1064 nm) to interact effectively with metals. Fiber lasers are used to create permanent, durable markings on everything from stainless steel and aluminum to titanium and brass. For some anodized or coated metals, they can also diode laser give good results. For more versatile needs there are flexx solutions which combines fiber and CO₂ lasers in one machine.
What metals can I engrave with an engraving machine?
With the right laser machine, you can engrave a variety of metals, including:
- Stainless steel
- Anodized and natural aluminum
- Brass
- Copper
- Titan
- Precious metals such as gold and silver
- Coated metals and specialty materials such as AlumaMark® and DuraBlack®
The laser marking becomes permanent, precise and highly resistant to external influences.
What is the difference between marking and engraving in metal?
engraving means that the laser removes material to create a depression in the metal surface – often with a clear structure and noticeable feel. Marking, for example with a fiber laser, changes the surface without removing material. This can be done through color change, oxidation or surface structuring. The marking is permanent but more superficial – common for data matrix codes and logos where wear resistance is required without affecting the strength of the material.
What accessories are needed to engrave metal effectively?
The accessories depend on your needs, but some common ones are:
- Rotation unit – for engraving on round objects such as pipes and bottles
- Extraction system – to keep the work surface clean from smoke and particles
- Positioning system – for precise positioning of the part
- Temperature sensors – for sensitive materials or heat handling
Logimark helps you choose the right options based on your production and materials.
How do I maintain a metal engraving machine?
Laser machines are relatively maintenance-free, but regular cleaning and inspection are important to ensure performance and longevity.
- Clean lenses and mirrors regularly
- Check and replace filters in the extraction system if necessary.
- Update the software and calibrate the machine according to the manufacturer's instructions. With Logimark as a partner, we also offer service agreements and technical support for ongoing maintenance and quick assistance in the event of downtime.
